Few states are known for their natural beauty and scenery as Vermont is. From the rugged Green Mountains to the placid waters of Lake Champlain to the stunning fall foliage, Vermont makes the perfect rural getaway. The state also has plenty to offer in terms of cultural attractions and other destinations as well. Understanding Vermont’s regions, people and history better will give travelers a much more rounded view on Vermont and ultimately a more satisfying trip.
The Basics
Vermont is a rural state, larger only than Wyoming in terms of population. The state lacks a major public transportation network, meaning that a car is your best bet when traveling to and from Vermont. Vermont has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Lastly, although Vermont is cheap compared to nearby East Coast cities like Boston and New York, remember to plan and budget accordingly.
Lake Champlain and Burlington
Lake Champlain is one of Vermont’s prime attractions. Bordering New York on the state’s western edge, Lake Champlain offers a plethora of recreational options, including boating, fishing, swimming and sightseeing. Remember to keep an eye out for “Champ,” the resident lake monster! Ferry service on the lake is available for recreational and travel purposes.
Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, lies on the edge of Lake Champlain. This quaint and historic city offers a number of attractions for visitors, including shopping at Church Street Marketplace and Dragon Boat races held in August. Burlington is also known for its strong local music and arts scene.
The Green Mountains
The Green Mountains offer stunning vistas and views. Skiing, hiking, biking and walking along nature trails are all popular activities. Make a point to see this region in the autumn; the fall foliage and breathtaking mountain views are nothing short of spectacular. Pay a visit to Green Mountain National Forest to take in the pristine woodlands views and get away from the hustles and bustle of modern life.
The Northeast Kingdom
The Northeast Kingdom, encompassing Orleans, Essex and Caledonia counties in northeastern Vermont, boasts beautiful rural scenery and plenty of forests to explore. This region is known for its maple syrup production and unspoiled natural beauty. Pay a visit to the city of Newport and take in its historic New England charm.
Montpelier
Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, offers plenty of culture and amenities with a small town feel. Montpelier is home to the Vermont History Museum and the T. W. Wood Gallery & Arts Center. The city also boasts several beautiful churches and historic buildings.
